The Sounds of the Season

I wrote last week about trains and my love of trains. Since then I have encountered 3 extremely long trains while driving. I think it was to show their appreciation for my recommendation of trains and train rides. So this week, I decided to write about banks at the holidays so they can show their appreciation. (Just kidding. A girl can dream can't she?)

Shedding Some Light on Christmas

This is wonderful family time of year. It is impossible not to get caught up in the seasonal hype. But hey, that is not a bad thing. Thanksgiving to Christmas is fun, frantic and a great time to get out and enjoy many activities that have a holiday event theme.  We are barely two weeks into the long holiday event season and things are already in full swing. This week I was torn by which category of events to highlight. Then I thought why not forget highlights what about just “lights”. There are some wonderful lighted parades and fantasy light shows that would be a  great place to start. Christmas lights are one of my most favorite holiday things. I am so traumatized after the season when they all come down.

Gobble Up Some Thanksgiving Traditions This Week

I know. I apologize. It was just that I wanted to jump into the Thanksgiving theme right away and few things have an immediate connection to Thanksgiving better than a turkey. I love Thanksgiving. I am sure that comes as no surprise to anyone. I mean, a holiday that is all about eating. I am such an advocate that I am wondering why I still haven’t been invited to be the Grand Marshall at any of these parades?

Here Comes Santa Claus. Really?

I was looking over the events this week and I noticed quite a few small town parades to welcome Santa. I checked and rechecked the list. I was thinking maybe I was wrong about the dates. I reran the searches again. No, it was right. How can this be? Can it be possible that the Christmas events are starting so early? Can it? Well it turns out that it isn’t really early. I must have lost a few weeks somewhere. (No smart remarks out there like big surprise, lol).

That means that Thanksgiving is about than 10 days away. Yikes!!!! I am so not ready. That also means that the shopping season is just about ready to begin as well. I heard that this year many stores are starting their Black Friday sales 5 days earlier. Does that mean in a week the crazy sales for Black Friday will be underway? Does that make them Black Sunday sales? I will choose not follow that thought any further as I am already confused. (Again, same smart remark reference from before).

I really like holiday traditions like these parades. I remember years of marching in the local Christmas Welcome Santa parades as a child. They are special, fond memories that I hold dear today. I marched in those parades as a girl scout because civic and other groups comprised most of the parade participants.  I grew up in a very small town and it was wonderful to see almost the whole town come out on these occasions.

This week I am inviting you to start your Christmas season off not with shopping, but with some pre-Thanksgiving parades. They aren't early. In fact they are right on time. If you can start a tradition this holiday of visiting a parade near you before Thanksgiving and set the tone for fond memories of your own; ones that do not begin and end with trying to find parking spaces at a mall. So grab the kids, grandma and maybe even the family dog who can sometimes attend public parades, and get out there and welcome both Santa and the season. If there are no parades on this list in your backyard, please use the search box and find some terrific welcome Santa events near you.

Hug a Veteran This Week

I really should have said hug a veteran and active duty person every chance you get, not just this week. Through the years and wars America’s Veterans, while they were active duty members, have answered the call.  There has been a lot of focus on the presidential election rightly so. Just think however, that this and all of our elections were made possible by our military personnel. Do not even forget the fact that military personnel are not only willing to give their life for their country but they give up their lives. The sacrifices are more that being on the front lines. They include separation from their family and friends, being away from the U.S and all of our lifestyle creature comforts and they sacrifice financially as military personnel traditionally are paid no where near what they could be making in the general workforce. So why do they do it? Because they feel it is important and worth whatever it takes to make sure that we continue to have free elections along with our all of our freedom.

Autumn Leaves, The Sycamores...

Can you fill in the rest…..Moonlight in Vermont? If you got that right, then you are either a fan of great music or a lover of fall. As I mentioned in last weeks blog, over the next few weeks I will be highlighting events that are celebrations of that fabulous season, fall. The themes are derived from the season. Previously I discussed apple festivals, this week I showcase “fall” festivals. Now you have to wonder, what exactly is a fall festival?

Looking over the weeks events, I am pleased to tell you that they sure have a ton of things happening one site. Lots of these events listed food and food courts as an important part. Food is always a necessary ingredient in the success of an event, in my opinion. (I heard that!) Many feature arts and crafts and I am talking 100’s of arts and craft people onsite selling, demonstrating and displaying their talents. Most include live entertainment. Not Uncle Bob playing the harmonica entertainment but regional and national talent. Also almost all feature special sections for children and children’s activities. These include crafts or petting zoos and also some have carnival rides. These are not just fall festivals to give people something to do on a Saturday afternoon. These are some of the biggest and best festival all year. As a matter of fact, I could have listed 100’s of events this week and barely scratched the surface of what is going on around the country.

And I also have a few honorable mentions this week. And the reason is that they are not really “fall festivals”, other than they take place in the fall. They include Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in Carlisle PA, the Chicago Marathon and Fleet Week in San Francisco. These are very highly regarded events and I mention them in case you happen to be in these areas, they are certainly worth the trip.

As always, these events represent some of the ways people will celebrate in the U.S this week. There may be many different ways that they celebrate fall in your area. You can find out more at www.eventcrazy.com. by simple using the search box on the home page to find fun things to do in your backyard. Whatever you do, get outside and enjoy the beautiful fall colors, weather and festivals.

Dancing in the Streets This Week

There are a few things that big cities and small towns have in common when it comes to events. One example is themes like holidays or ethnic celebrations. Another thing is street festivals. And all along these “Main Street’s”, great traditions take place year after year. They disguise themselves as street festivals. And although the size of the street may vary along with the size of the crowd, the events take place at the center crossroads. These crossroads serve as the hub of everything important to the community. It’s where people shop, eat and socialize; where they want to see and be seen. Not all are downtown Chicago or New York either.  I have been in so many places in this country where the post office, luncheonette, drug store and grocery store are all not only on one street, they are all in one building. Not quite Sam Drucker’s store in Hooterville but not too far removed either. And by no means is that a negative; quite the contrary, I personally think it’s wonderful.

The idea of street festivals is nothing new. Harking back to the center of town being the center of everything, street festivals were the original trade days, political rally’s and town meeting place. Steeped in years of home town pride and celebrations of all that a community has to offer, they are hallmarks of civic gatherings. These experiences are excellent bonding and sharing opportunities within small communities and major cities as well.

This week is not unique in the amount of street festivals but I wanted to do something to highlight these fun celebrations. Also, it is not your grandma’s street festival anymore. They have become sophisticated major events that take over whole small towns and sometimes as much as 20 blocks of big cities. Maybe it’s because a street, while not necessarily a traditional 4 walled venue, is still the most traditional venue of all.

Here is a list of some wonderful street festivals taking place this week. Any one of these would be an excellent way to spend you precious free time. If there isn’t anything on this list that geographically works for you, please use the search box above to find exciting events taking place in your backyard. Let’s have a little dancing in the streets!

Dinner, of Sorts, at Events This Week

Being the super observant person that I am, I found an interesting pattern emerging from the events this week. And just so you do not think it was my love of eating causing the pattern to emerge, I want to assure you that it was not. It seems, from the choices this week, one could make a casual dinner of sorts.  It might not be Cordon Bleu but a case can be made for it being good old American fare. You will need to use your imagination just a bit to play along but here goes.

First up we will start with a bowl of popcorn on every table to curb hunger while you wait. That takes us to the Marion Popcorn Festival in Marion, OH which features not only delicious popcorn but, a fabulous event as well. From there we move on to appetizers. I have chosen some fresh and yummy oysters from the Oyster Festivals in Asbury Park, NJ and Norwalk CT. If oysters are a little too much for you, how about some wonderful mushrooms any way you want them from the National Mushroom Festival in Kennett Square, PA?

Eclectic Events for Labor Day

Eclectic Labor Days Events

Ah, the Labor Day weekend celebrations. In many ways bittersweet, they are some of the best events of the year. This week I decided to showcase a selection of really big events under the theme “eclectic”. (no I am not referring to my home furnishing which I classify as eclectic because it is more polite then "early attic" ) These events are a group of many different types of events. And even though they do not have "Labor Day" in the title of the event,  I can assure you that they are much anticipated Labor Day events.  It is just that they do not depend on Labor Day to create their themes. These events could take place any other time of the year and stand on the merits of the event itself, not the holiday.

Last Hurrah of Summer

This is the last weekend before the unofficial end of summer on Labor Day weekend. Even though there is still 3+ weeks left of summer according to the calendar, we think of the end when the kids go back to school and vacations at the beach and summer camps are finally over. Most college students are back on campus by now. It’s a sad time for the kids, great time for the parents (sorry kids).
