Wow, the holiday shopping season is here already. Can you believe it? I laugh now looking back… My dad always had a backache the day after Thanksgiving and now I know why. He didn’t want make the drive, fight the crowds, carry the packages and handle the kids while my mom shopped! The one thing that hasn’t changed is that men still don’t like to go shopping. What has changed is how dangerous it can actually be if you aren’t aware of your surroundings.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS

It’s hard to believe that the kids are heading back to school already! At least while they are in school there is that small sigh of relief knowing that they are safe. It’s getting to & from that always makes me a little nervous. We are extra cautious at the beginning of the year & with the little ones when they start out but as the year goes by maybe we don’t pay as much attention as we once did. Here are some simple reminders & tips.

911 SHOULD BE JUST 1 (NUMBER)

Most everyone is carrying a mobile phone type device, PDA, I Phone, etc. and all of them operate a little bit differently when making calls or sending messages. Often your mobile phone is your primary tool to call for help and sometimes it’s not so easy to simply dial 911 with so many apps and features on your phone. There are more than 100,000 apps being offered for many phones. Adding to the confusion there now are also many emergency applications being offered that can complicate the issue. When there is an emergency what you really need is the simplest method possible to get help fast! 911 should be just 1 number speed dial!

Follow these simple tips:

1. Calling 911 should be a one touch operation.

· Program a single key to dial 911!

· Pick a letter and program all your families’ phones the same way.

2. Understand the basic operation of your phone and how it works!

· Read the Instructions!

· Take time to play with it and be comfortable with its operation in various modes.

3. Make sure the device is charged and always have an additional power source.

· A second battery.

· A car charger.

4. Almost all devices will call 911 even without a service provider.

· The device still needs to be charged and powered on to make a call

· Test this before you have an emergency!

5. Do you know if your device can make a call while it’s locked or while an app is operating?

6. If you are relying on a “one touch” app for your safety you need to know the following:

· Will the application still work if the key pad is locked?

· Will the application stay active if a phone call comes in?

· Are you able to make an outgoing call while the application is active?

· Does the application require a special plan or service to operate?

· Are you able to use other applications while the safety app is active?

Did They Really Do That?

My husband & I are always talking about those cute little stick family pictures you see on the back of the SUV’s and mini-vans and sure enough we were walking through the parking lot and saw another one. Now we weren’t talking about them for the reasons you think… we were talking about them because you are opening yourself up to unwanted attention & possibly dangerous attention!

It’s ok to put the pictures without names but once you start adding the pets & names you are telling everyone who you are. One day we actually saw a camper that not only had all the kids & pet names but they had their last name on the spare tire cover! Now that’s just plain crazy! You have a given a bad guy (or girl) all the information they need to start a conversation with anyone in your family.

When people are approached by name they are usually less defensive because they feel like they have a connection with the person approaching them. A bad person will play it up in many ways…Don’t you remember me? How’s scruffy? Did you get another cat? I didn’t know “Brandon” was playing soccer now! Any of those questions or comments would start a very regular conversation bringing the bad person even closer.

All of us have been in that awkward moment of someone we know but can’t remember their name walking up to us. What’s different about this is it’s someone you know. If someone approaches you by name and you have no idea who they are you need to be cautious! This could be a dangerous situation! What if you left your teenager in the car and a stranger who read the name on the back of your car walked up to them and spoke with them by name. What do you think they would do? I would bet they will talk to the person!

Even if nothing happen immediately, remember we live in the world of technology. Someone stalking you could take that information and find you online! It’s sad that we have to think that way, but times really have changed.

Take precautions! Safety can be simple!

Bullying

What do you know about bullying? Probably more than you think. It's not just about the kids who steal lunch money or make fun of your clothes in school. If you grew up with siblings you were probably bullied at home & didn't even realize it. Your brother or sister may have picked on your bedtime, the tooth you lost or any other number of little things in your life. You probably didn't think of it as being bullied but it was in away. They made fun of you & you were upset. What did you do? Hopefully you made your parents aware. Usually parents will step in to mediate the situation, educate the sibling who is bullying and correct it. The key steps to addressing bullying head-on are E.T.A-Education, Training & Awareness.
